The birth of a visionary movement in Quebec !

In 1999, in the basement of Montreal’s Saint-Pierre-Claver church, Claire Morissette and Bob Silverman inaugurated a revolution on two wheels, founding La Société d’éducation pour le cyclisme, which later became Cyclo Nord-Sud.

Strongly inspired by Quebec and American initiatives (e.g. Bikes Not Bombs and Pedals For Progress) promoting cycling as an ecological and social solution, Claire set up an ambitious project.

To recover unused bicycles and bike parts and redistribute them to regions in the Global South, thereby promoting sustainable mobility and effectively combating poverty.

Claire drew on her wealth of experience acquired with the Le Monde à Bicyclette cycling collective, a founding organization for the promotion of cycling as an environmentally-friendly means of transport. The efforts made by this organization and by Claire have not only led to the creation of numerous bike paths in Montreal, but have also encouraged thousands of people to choose the bicycle over the car.

A living, inspiring legacy

Since its first bike collection in 1999 and first overseas shipment in 2000, Cyclo Nord-Sud has grown significantly. From the confined space of a church basement, the organization has moved to a more spacious warehouse, symbolizing its continuous expansion and constant evolution.

This growth is the expression of the enthusiasm and energy of thousands of volunteers who have come together to create a more socially just reality, and to make Claire Morissette’s dream a tangible and wonderful reality.

The very essence of Cyclo Nord-Sud lies in the human stories it has shaped: the women who have regained their freedom of movement, the children whose access to education has been facilitated, and the families whose daily lives have been transformed by increased mobility.

With over 70,000 bicycles recycled since it was founded, Cyclo Nord-Sud has established itself as an essential force in the movement for sustainable mobility and solidarity, both locally and internationally.

Towards a future of cycling and solidarity

Today, Claire’s vision continues to pulsate at the heart of Cyclo Nord-Sud. Every day, the team and its volunteers are determined to extend the positive impact of cycling, encouraging more and more people to discover the freedom and opportunities that this simple tool can offer.

It’s a vibrant call to action, a cry from the heart for renewed mobility that’s accessible to all. Cyclo Nord-Sud continues to pave the way for a more prosperous future, while cultivating a community that firmly believes in the transformative power of the bicycle.

Together, we’ll make the world a place where cycling isn’t just a means of transportation, but a symbol of harmony, solidarity and infinite opportunity.
