Le Monde à Bicyclette

Le Monde à Bicyclette (today, Encore du Monde à Bicyclette) is a non-profit organization founded in April 1975 by Robert Silverman (also known as Bicycle Bob) and Vicki Schmolka. In the early months of the organization, Claire Morissette (1950-2007) joined the team.

Bicycle Bob’s goals were to increase the use of bicycles as an environmentally friendly means of urban transportation, to ease traffic congestion and to revitalize downtown areas.

Over nearly 30 years of advocacy, including a first cyclodrama in 1976, Le Monde à Bicyclette has stopped at nothing to make the city bikeable and occupy public space.

Le Monde à Bicyclette’s dazzling victories include: the missing link between Île Notre-Dame and Montreal’s South Shore; the development of bicycle parking in public buildings; the bicycle path between Nuns’ Island and Montreal; bicycle access to the metro and commuter trains as of 1982; and the Champlain Bridge boom.

Soaring popularity of the four-season bike

Winter biking is an even more recent phenomenon. Every year, more cyclists take to the snowy streets of Montreal and several other cities in the province. There were 100,000 in 201512. With their studded tires, ski goggles and heated mittens, they’re sure to attract attention at intersections. In 2017, hundreds of cyclists, young and old, rode 10 or 15 km as part of a rendezvous organized by Vélo Québec in Montreal. Since 2014, a winter bike crossing of Lac Saint-Jean has even taken place every year !

Here are a few videos on four-season cycling, created by Environnement JEUnesse.
