YMCA Manabí – Ecuador

The Young Men´s Christian Association Manabí (YMCA Manabí) is an organisation of young ecuadorean based in Portoviejo since 1998. The collaboration with Cyclo Nord-Sud became effective a fews day after the earthquake of magnitude 7.8 that hit the Manabi province and specifically the Portoviejo region April 16th 2016.

Faced with this situation and the mobility issues caused by the earthquake, Cyclo Nord-Sud and the YMCA Manabí have joined their expertise to organize the project « Resilience through bikes ».

// Resilience through bikes (La resiliencia por la bicicleta)

Thought this projet, YMCA Manabí and Cyclo Nord-Sud work towards :

  • better mobility by distributing or selling low-cost bikes to disadvantaged communities touched by the earthquake (mostly families in rural and marginalized areas…),
  • support the development of social economy initiatives around bicycles, with specific training for young people and women,
  • encourage projects generating benefits and contributing to the economic and community development of Portoviejo.

This projet received the support of the Québec International Development Program (PQDI) from the Ministère des relations internationales et de la francophonie (MRIF) for 2017 to 2019.
