Universidad Central Marta Abreu de las Villas

Cyclo Nord-Sud and the construction faculty of the Universitad Central “Marta Abreu” de las Villas, in collaboration with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, have been partnered since 2006 to implement strategies for local housing management in Cuba. The project Habitat has had a first phase from 2006 to 2011 aiming at repairing and upgrading the bikes of farmers, field workers and employees of projects like Eco Materiales and Bambou-Biomasse. Between 2014 and 2017 took place the second phase, directed at involving central Cuba’s 10 municipalities (Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus) in a multisectoral project (architecture, social, communication, economy, sociology, law and environment) that consisted in enhancing general conditions of housing (water, power, houses, transportation, town planning, public spaces, waste management, climate impact). Each municipality received a bike lot that it then distributed freely among recipients that had been selected beforehand by a local committee. Each municipality also implemented a bike workshop where parts and services are accessible either for free or at a very low cost for recipients. The project is about to start its third phase in 2019!

Cyclo Nord-Sud, thanks to financing from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation was able to send tools and spare parts necessary to the workshops’ installation.
